Aalto-korkeakoulusäätiö, operating as Aalto University (AALTO), is a Finnish multidisciplinary university in the fields of science and technology, economics, architecture, and art and design. Aalto University was founded in 2010 by merging three Finnish universities: 
The Helsinki School of Economics, The University of Art and Design Helsinki, and Helsinki University of Technology. The three schools are all leading and renowned institutions in their respective fields and in their own right. In particular, the formerly independent Helsinki University of Technology is the second-oldest university in Finland, and the leading Finnish university of technology and architecture. 
Helsinki University of Technology continues its activities in the form of four Aalto University Schools corresponding to its former
faculties: the School of Chemical Technology, the School of Electrical Engineering, the School of Engineering and the School of Science. 
Since 2012, Aalto University has participated to 128 EU FP7 project, acting as coordinator in 37 of them. Aalto University currently holds
12 ERC grants.

The research groups active in DIAMOND are the Water Engineering Group, which is part of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of Aalto School of Engineering, and the Environmental and Industrial Machine Learning Group from the Department of Information and Computer Science of Aalto School of Science. The Water Engineering Group focuses its research and teaching activities on wastewater treatment as well as wastewater collection systems (more information is available at: http://civil.aalto.fi/en/research/water/). The Environmental and Industrial Machine Learning Group develops and validates methods for modelling, summarising and visualising complex industrial and environmental systems through the integration of Adaptive Informatics, Statistical Machine Learning and Information Visualization (more information is available at: http://research.ics.tkk.fi/eiml/) .

By nature, the application of advanced process control to wastewater treatment process is interdisciplinary and involves expertise not only from process and environmental engineering, but also from chemistry, automation, control and signal processing. With this respect, the Water Engineering Group will focus its research activity on process control and optimization, whereas the Environmental and Industrial Machine Learning Group will focus on process data analysis and visualization for process control, in order to provide, within DIAMOND, a wide and comprehensive spectrum of advanced solutions for the automation of wastewater treatment plants.
